Catalist Opt Out: Deletion, Verification and Privacy Choices
Request Catalist deletion and sale opt-out through its state-based form. Learn the verification steps and limits for voter files and campaign copies.

To opt out of Catalist, open its official Your Privacy Choices form, select your state and choose the available deletion or sale opt-out request. Catalist's policy says it honors deletion and sale opt-out requests from any state. The form's “Any other state” path combines those actions and asks for identity details plus an email verification code. A Catalist opt out does not remove your voter registration or erase every campaign's independent records.
We checked the policy and public form on October 30, 2026. We opened the state-dependent controls without entering personal information, sending a verification code or submitting a request. The guide describes the observed intake and published policy, not a tested removal result.
What does a Catalist request address?
Catalist works with political and civic data. Its privacy policy describes information from several sources and explains its privacy choices. This is different from deleting a public people-search listing by pasting a profile URL into an opt-out box.
The policy says opting out removes information from its files while retaining enough information on a suppression list to prevent reintroduction. That distinction matters: a minimal suppression record can serve your opt-out rather than represent continued use of the full profile.
| Goal | What to do | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Delete and opt out of sale | Use the state-appropriate privacy form | Universal erasure from every political database |
| Correct or access information | Choose the right available for your state | That correction itself stops sale |
| Stop contact from a particular campaign | Contact that sender about its copy | That Catalist is the source of every message |
| Change official voter information | Use the relevant election authority | A commercial privacy request is not voter-registration management |
| Keep deleted information from returning | Retain the opt-out confirmation and check any recurrence | A guarantee that no other source will ever collect it |
For the broader distinction between data suppliers and original records, see what a data broker is. Keep the database request separate from decisions about your public records or participation in civic activity.
Start with the official state selector

Open Catalist's Your Privacy Choices page. The form begins with “In which state do you reside?” Choose your actual state. Named states have their own paths, while “Any other state” is available for residents outside that list.
The policy explicitly says it honors deletion and sale opt-out requests from any state. Do not select California simply to reveal more controls if you do not live there. State selection affects the available rights and matching questions.
During inspection, selecting “Any other state” revealed a combined choice to delete and opt out of sale. Other paths may show additional request types. Follow the version that corresponds to your residency rather than copying another person's screen exactly.
If you cannot use the form, the policy lists (800) 938-9516 for privacy requests. It gives privacy@catalist.us for questions about its practices. We verified that those contacts are published; we did not place a call or test email delivery.
Review the identifying fields before entering data
The expanded path asks for a declaration that you are making the request for yourself. It shows first and last name, address components, city, state, ZIP code, birthdate and email as required fields. Middle name, suffix and additional address fields help distinguish records where relevant.
The form labels telephone as a contact field and explains that email and telephone information are used to communicate about the request. Do not supply unrelated relatives' details or a full history of every address unless the process actually requires them.
Consider the matching problem before proceeding. Someone with your name in the same city is not necessarily you. Accurate identity details help avoid acting on another person's record, while unnecessary information increases what you disclose during the process.
The policy allows identity or residency verification, including a request for evidence where appropriate. That is not an instruction to attach identification to the first email you send. Check the request, recipient and required information before sharing any document.
Complete verification and keep the outcome
The observed form includes a Verification Code field and a “Send Verification Code” control. When making your own request, use an email account you can access and follow the code instructions. Our inspection stopped before triggering this step, so no claim is made about delivery speed or the next screen.
Save the request date, selected action and any acknowledgment. Avoid taking screenshots that expose your full birthdate or address in a shared folder. A short private log with the reference number and correspondence is usually more useful for follow-up.
The form states that information submitted through it will be deleted in accordance with the privacy policy after completion. Read that alongside the policy's suppression and retention provisions. The policy does not promise that every trace of an opt-out request disappears immediately.
If verification fails, ask which matching step was unsuccessful and what the company needs to resolve it. Do not keep sending duplicate requests with inconsistent identities. Preserve the original reference so a follow-up can be connected to the existing case.
How long should you wait?
We did not establish one universal completion promise from the observed form. Catalist publishes historical California request metrics, but an average from a previous reporting period is not a deadline for your request or evidence of current performance.
Use the acknowledgment, policy and any applicable response instructions to track your case. If no meaningful response arrives, contact the published privacy route with the original request date and ask for status. Distinguish a code email, receipt and final decision in your notes.
Ask for clarification if the response is partial. The policy describes retention for suppression, security, legal obligations and other specified purposes. A useful completion response should help you understand what changed and what, if anything, remains.
Do not describe a request as successful solely because you stopped receiving one campaign email. That sender may have changed its schedule, or the original source may have been another organization. The company response is the more direct evidence of this particular process.
What can remain after opting out?
An opt-out from Catalist does not itself change an official voter file or erase information already controlled by unrelated organizations. If your concern is a government record, ask the responsible authority about the specific correction or confidentiality process available to you.
For campaign contact, start with the organization that sent the message and ask it to stop using its copy. Avoid assuming that every political email or text originated with Catalist. That assumption can send you through the wrong removal process.
Other political-data businesses have separate routes. Our DSPolitical opt-out guide and Deep Root Analytics guide can help if those companies are actually involved. Do not send requests indiscriminately based only on an industry label.
If your address appears on a public listing as well, investigate that exposure separately. Removing information from Google addresses search results, while deleting a source record addresses the underlying website. Neither is a substitute for this database request.
Plan a focused follow-up
Keep Catalist's confirmation with the identifiers and request scope you used. If a later response suggests your information returned, compare the record and date before assuming it is the same dataset. Updated source information, distinct profiles and independent recipients can complicate the picture.
A free privacy scan can help you find public broker listings elsewhere. It is not a test of Catalist's nonpublic database or proof that its suppression worked. Use the opt-out guide hub to handle other identified companies through their own processes.
Your request checklist
- Select your actual state in the privacy form.
- Review the request choices revealed for that state.
- Provide accurate matching information through the official route.
- Follow the email verification instructions for your own request.
- Keep the final decision and track sender complaints separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can residents outside California make a request?
Catalist's checked policy says it honors deletion and sale opt-out requests from any state. Its form includes an “Any other state” path. Use accurate residency information; additional rights and controls can differ by state.
Will this cancel my voter registration?
This is a request to Catalist about its records. It is not the election authority's registration-management process. Do not use a commercial opt-out form to try to change your official voter registration.
Why does the form ask for my birthdate?
The inspected path includes birthdate among its identity fields. Matching helps distinguish people with similar names and addresses. Read the company's policy and verification instructions before deciding what to provide.
Is a suppression record the same as a full profile?
No. The policy describes retaining limited information to keep an opted-out record from being reintroduced. Ask for clarification if you need to understand what is retained and the purpose for doing so.
Will political texts stop immediately?
That result is not established by the sources. Senders may have independent lists or other sources. Ask the sender to stop, and treat the Catalist request as one specific data-control action.
